We are pleased to announce advanced training opportunities in the form of Masters and PhD places at UK universities as part of the Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy (DARA) Big Data project funded by the UK’s Newton Fund.
The opportunities are open to nationals of all AVN partner countries, namely: Ghana, Zambia, Kenya, Namibia, Botswana,Madagascar, Mozambique and Mauritius. These places are fully funded such that theNewton Fund will cover all tuition fees, bench fees and maintenance allowance at the RCUK recommended level of £14,553 per year. Projects are offered at: the University of Leeds,The University of Manchester, the University of Hertfordshire, the University of York and the University of Sussex. For each project, time will also be spent at a partner institution in South Africa or Africa to gain additional skills and build collaborations. The funds for this exchange visit, as well as an annual return flight to your home country, and initial visa and healthsurcharge costs will be covered by the Newton Fund.
The DARA Big Data project will target the translation of data intensive science skills from radio astronomy to other big data areas. In this first round the target translation areas are (1) Food Security & Sustainable Agriculture, and (2) Health Care. Masters and PhD projects are
available across the three big data areas: Astro Big Data, Agri Big Data & Health Big Data.
