Primary Purpose of the Position:
To plan, co-ordinate, and monitor inspections of facilities, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and GMO products to ensure
compliance with the provisions of the Bio-safety Act.
Key Performance Areas:
Co-ordinate all activities relating to the inspection of products, laboratory facilities, port entry and the environment, as per the Biosafety Act, 2006.
Assist Research Institutions with the registration of laboratory facilities dealing with GMOs and issuance of permits as per the Biosafety Act, 2006.
Review inspection reports from Inspector(s), review the findings, and signs these off and see to it that necessary reports are forwarded to the relevant authorities.
Maintain a filing system of all relevant documentations.
Perform inspections in person whenever required, i.e. complex inspections, as per the Biosafety Act, 2006.
Respond to all technical queries referred by the inspectors and provides the clients with the necessary information and advice.
Provide technical advice to stakeholders where inspections do not meet criteria to enable the latter to remedial action.
Supervise all reporting staff and attend to all management and leadership responsibilities.
Minimum Qualification, Experience & Competence Requirement:
A Bachelor of Science degree (NQF Level 7), in Food Technology or Biochemistry/ Biotechnology or Environmental Science and at least five (5) years’ relevant working experience in inspection.
Candidate must be a critical thinker, who is able to demonstrate a high level of diplomacy, especially when conducting inspections.
Sound knowledge of international and national Biosafety frameworks.
Excellent interpersonal, facilitation and communication skills.
Must be analytical and able to interpret relevant legislations.
Ability to supervise and lead a team.
Incumbent must have a valid drivers licence and must be able to spent some of the working time in the field.
This is a permanent appointment with a performance agreement.
