Job Grading: Paterson C3

Primary Purpose of the Position:
To plan, co-ordinate, monitor and supervise biotechnology-related laboratory testing, i.e. genetically modified organism (GMO) or GMO
product safety, in compliance with the biosafety requirements as set out in the Biosafety Act, 2006 (Act no.7, 2006).
 
Key Performance Areas:
 
  • Coordinate all functions of the GMO detection laboratory, including prioritisation of testing schedules to be conducted in the GMO laboratory.
  • Identify all areas in which the GMO testing should be conducted and continuously monitor the Institution’s practices regarding GMO testing and research.
  • Maintain the quality management system in the laboratory and develop and update manuals, as and when required.
  • Evaluate available resources against ISO standards in order to obtain and maintain a GMO laboratory certification/accreditation status.
  • Ensure the maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment on a regular basis.
  • Implement effective housekeeping and hygiene standards to ensure maintenance of the laboratory health & safety regulations.
  • Review, authorise, and maintain a record of laboratory test reports.
  • Report test results to clients and other relevant authorities and provide expert advice to management and relevant stakeholders on test improvements.
  • Accountable for the laboratory budget and the procurement of material and equipment as when needed.
  • Supervise all reporting staff and attend to all management and leadership responsibilities.

 

Minimum Qualification, Experience & Competence Requirement:
 
  • A Bachelor of Science Degree (NQF Level 7) in Biotechnology, Biochemistry or Microbiology.
  • At least five (5) years’ relevant working experience in a testing laboratory.
  • A sound knowledge of ISO 17025 and international and national Biosafety legislative frameworks.
  • Must be a critical thinker, with excellent interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • Ability to supervise and lead a team.
  • Ability to demonstrate diplomacy, especially when dealing with clients.
  • The incumbent should be able to spent most of the working time in the laboratory.
